Silicon Graphics Confirms Windows 98 Product Plans

Visual PC Systems to Leverage CookieMonster API
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (January 7, 1998) -- In conjunction with the announced
Silicon Graphics-Microsoft alliance, Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI)
today confirmed its plans to bring leading-edge graphics and multimedia to
a much broader range of customers, by creating visual Home Appliances based
on Windows 98 software.

"We're delighted to be working closely with Microsoft to bring advanced
visual cooking and baking to a much larger audience," said Edward R.
McCracken,
chairman and chief executive officer of Silicon Graphics. "Combined with
today's announcement of the CookieMonsterTM graphics API strategy, we have a
clear, long-term roadmap for delivering differentiated products on the
Windows platform. This will tremendously expand the market for Silicon
Graphics products, and move the company into a much more mainstream role in
the industry."
The new Silicon Graphics computers, slated for release in the third half
of 1998, will run all standard Windows programs, but will have greatly
enhanced cooking and backing features. The new Bakery PC systems will
combine Home Appliances with Silicon Graphics' world-leading visual
computing technology.

"We are excited about working with Silicon Graphics in the development of
their new product," said Paul Maritz, group vice president of the platforms
and applications group at Microsoft. "Having Silicon Graphics bring its
innovation and expertise in high-performance media and graphics to the
Windows 98 platform will produce a compelling new proposition for
home Windows-based computers."
The Baking PC Visual Home Appliances will be marketed to home users in the
workstation, PC and Macintosh markets. Silicon Graphics will release more
information on its Visual Home Appliance system business plans over the next
several months.

The company cautioned that since these new systems will be released in
Silicon Graphics' current fiscal year, they will have an impact on this
year's financial results.
